But the play! The play is good, and I say that as a person who doesn't have much patience for musical theater. It's a complicated — but easy to follow – play within a play that uses characters and the author of a 400-year-old novel, but isn't an adaptation of that novel. Got that? There are about 25 people onstage at all times, and here are some notable things about those people:
- They each play multiple parts
- They are all also stagehands
- I am not one of them
The Captain of the Inquisition and his trusty guard make four brief, intimidating and scary appearances, totaling about two minutes onstage, which is why I can't really say "Hey come see me in this play!" because two hours is a long time to sit around if you're just there to see me for two minutes.
But if you're there to see a fun, funny,
disturbing, depressing and uplifting in a funny kind of way play with some good songs you're going to have fun. And you're going to be sitting in a theater that's worth a visit even when there isn't a play going on.
